Slovenia ( Slovene: Slovenija), is a parliamentary republic and a member of the European Union and NATO in southern Central Europe. It borders Italy, Austria, Croatia, and Hungary. It covers 7,827 square miles and has a population of 2.05 million. Its capital and largest city is Ljubljana. Four major European geographic units meet on the territory of Slovenia: the Alps, the Dinaric Mountains, the Pannonian Plain, and the Mediterranean, with a small portion of coastline along the Adriatic Sea. The territory has an exceptionally high landscape and great biological diversity, and the country is one of the most water-rich in Europe. Most of Slovenia has a sub-Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters, while an Alpine climate is found in the north-western part of the country. Fantastic alpine landscapes, lovely vineyards, turquoise rivers and a short piece of Mediterranean coast, strewn with lovely old villages and cities make for a little paradise waiting to be discovered. You won’t regret making Slovenia part of your Croatia or Austria trip!
Slovenia has somewhat recently emerged as a world-class tourism destination, and for many very good reasons. With stunning geography ranging from high Alpine meadows to Adriatic Sea fishing villages, and a wide variety of landscapes in between (including wine growing regions), Slovenia really does have something for almost everyone.
